Valladolid, Spain

Modern day Valladolid (with approximately 400,000 people) threatens to engulf the glory days of the city, but come for Semana Santa (Easter Week) to enjoy some of the longest and strongest of the Easter celebrations in all of Spain.

Now the capital of Castile and Leon, Valladolid was once the capital of all of Spain.

The Plaza Mayor is one of the most elegant and spacious of all the country's plazas giving human theater its full airing, and was a model for other plazas around Spain and beyond.

See contemporary Spanish Art in the Museo Patio Herrerirano and the unfinished Vallodolid Cathedral by day and try authentic Castilian cuisine at El Caballo de Troya at night.

The Univeristy of Vallodolid, chartered by Clement VI in 1346, is a popular place for young people to study abroad and the National Sculpture Museum houses one of the most comprehensive collections of Spanish sculpture in the world.

Accommodations are plentiful and cheap down the side streets near the Plaza Mayor.
