Saint Paul de Vence (Languedoc-Roussillon)
Pop: 300 (within the walls)
This town sees two to three million tourists annually (or
vice versa).
Saint Paul de Vence encompasses a village-fortress-on a
narrow ridge between two deep valleys-and outlying
residences. From its roost, Saint Paul-de-Vence has
mountains as a backdrop while overlooking the Mediterranean
and French Riviera.
The fortress, itself, is so densely populated by tourists
during all seasons one would be challenged to find a
resident. During the high season, the confines of the walled
commune are crammed to the tune of shoulder-to-shoulder
strolls throughout.
The out-of-wall area, called "Vence" is quite scenic,
more pacific, and offers enjoyable terraced cafes and more
realistically-priced shops and art salons.
