Saint-Etienne, France

Saint-Etienne (Rhone-Alpes) Pop: 200,000

Located in south-central France in the Massif Central (area of mountains and plateaus), Saint-Etienne historically has been an important industrial city (i.e. arms and munitions production).

The city labored in relative isolation for years due to Frances under developed north-south transportation route that was at least partially attributable to this expansive Massif Central protuberance.

Saint-Etienne is now noteworthy for its major bicycle manufacturing activities and has often played host to a stage of the Tour de France.

The city's ribbons industry is also prominent and has been since the 15th century.
