(Upper
Normandy) Pop: 120,000 (city) 500,000 (metro)
Located in northern France on the Seine River, Rouen was
established by the Roman Empire and later, during the 11th
to the 15th century, was the capital of the Anglo-Norman
domain which encompassed England and much of France.
Rouen is the site where Joan d'Arc was burned at the
stake in 1431.
Its native sons and daughters include Marie Champmesle-actress,
Gustave Flaubert-of Madame Bovary fame, Marcel Dupre-composer
and Jacques Rivette-film director.
Rouen is France's largest river port and one of its
largest seaports thus offering insight concerning a major
part of its economic base. It also has a significant cotton
industry and ranks as a premier tourist site for this part
of France.
