Noirmoutier
(Poitou-Charentes)
Pop: 5,000
Noirmoutier is an island commune off the Atlantic coast
sporting a surprisingly active night life for its size due
to the late hours maintained by its celebratory
establishments.
Noirmoutier's economy boasts tourism, oyster harvesting,
fishing, and sea salt exports from its extensive salt
marshes.
The island can be reached by boat, bridge, and a paved
sand bar (Passage du Gois) that is submerged twice daily at
high tides.
The causeway is the site of an annual mainland to island
foot race, hopefully not at high tide. Attractive natural features include the salt marshes,
massive sand dunes, and maritime pines.
Noirmoutier also features windmills and grows large
quantities of mimosa for export.
