Nimes Tours and Attractions, France
See the Place aux Herbes (picturesque square), the episcopal palace, the ducal palace, the Fenestrelle tower and the Cathedral. Outside of Uzes is the catchment area of the Roman aqueduct (Pont du Gard) that brought spring water to Nimes. Visit of the famous Pont du Gard , amazing vestige of a 1st century Roman aqueduct and protected by the UNESCO. Nimes' disjointed political and cultural history has the makings of a Hollywood spectacular of restless possessions. Founded by the Greeks, Nimes became a major Roman outpost and was pillaged by Visigoths and Vandals (5th century A.D.). It was administered by Saracens until 737, controlled by the House of Toulouse during the 10th century, and finally assimilated into France in 1229. Attractively situated at the base of the Cevennes mountains, Nimes sports an active textile industry, especially silk. Its name "de Nimes" gave birth to the synonym, denim, for jeans.
