Newcastle is located on the Tyne River and part of a large metro area in the north of England. It can attribute its growth to the coal industry and establishment to the Roman Emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century A.D.

Remnants of what is called Hadrian's Wall (one of three defensive structures erected across England during the Roman conquest) are present in Newcastle today.
