Nancy (Lorraine) Pop: 135,000 (city) 415,000 (metro)

Nancy, another industrial city, is located in northeastern France on the Meurthe River with habitation roots dating to 800 B.C.

Charles the Bold was killed in the Battle of Nancy in 1477.

Of interest also is the city's Scottish connection.

While Nancy's motto is "No one touches me with impunity," Scotland's royal motto is "No one provokes me with impunity," both refer to the thistle plant, a symbol of both Lorraine and Scotland.

Nancy claims the following birth denizens: Francis I, Roman Emperor, Henri Poincare, mathematician and Antoine Drouot, a Napoleonic general.
