Hillwalking Clubs There are a number of mountaineering and hill-walking clubs in Ireland. You might want to check with each one to see if they will allow guests along. Bishopstown Hillwalking Club is one of the largest walking Clubs in Cork and in Munster. Most of our members are not actually from Bishopstown but from all over Cork City and County. We hold walks most weekends.
Bray Strollers At times we travel to other parts of the country; from Carrauntoohill to Slieve League, from Mt. Leinster to the Mournes, yes the 4 corners of the country, literally. Some of our members climb abroad giving the opportunity for exploring mountain ranges across Europe.
Comeragh Mountaineering Club We are based in Waterford City and our local mountains are the Comeraghs.
Croagh Patrick
(Ireland's Holy Mountain)
It is the holy ground on which St. Patrick rested, fasted and reflected during all 44 days of lent in 441 A.D. Here, too, according to legend, is where Ireland's patron saint banished the snakes from the island. It has been a place of pilgrimage ever since. The mountain is renowned for its annual Patrician Pilgrimage in honour of Ireland's national apostle and penitential exercises have been faithfully handed down by many generations. On the last Sunday of July each year, its slopes are full of pilgrims, many barefooted, climbing to the summit to attend Mass.
Dungarvan Hillwalking Club We also promote awareness of the need to maintain access, conservation and protection of the mountain and woodland environment. Today we have a growing membership of over 180 and are affiliated to the Mountaineering Council of Ireland (MCI).
Glen of Imaal The Glen of Imaal on the West Side of Wicklow is surrounded by these natural features and is the base for many hillwalker’s day and sometimes night expeditions on the hills. One of the most famous being Lugnaquilla Mountain (3093’) has always held a special place in the hearts of regular hill walkers. With a personality of its own, Lug, as she is commonly known, displays a different mood every time she’s visited. This ever changing and diverse character offers a wide variety of experiences so that the tug to return again and again is infinite. Lasting relationships often require gently beginnings. The Glen of Imaal is the ideal place to start. This fine Glen provides a choice of at least three routes to the mountain summit, all of which conveniently commence near a friendly and popular rest place, Fentons Pub.
