Limoges, France

Limoges (Limousin) Pop: 200,000

A major crossroads on the Vienne River, Limoges can be discovered in an appealing agricultural area of central France. Nearby are original Roman settlements which can be explored along with Limoges' vaunted botanical gardens.

Also known as the birthplace of the troubadours, Limoges has already celebrated its 2,000th anniversary, and through its numerous theatres, symphonies and museums, offers more than 500 annual cultural activities.

Unique to the University of Limoges is the Center for Sports Law and Economics.

Limoges piece de resistance, however, may be its porcelain which emerged during the 18th century with roots in medieval enamel fashioning.
