With narrow streets and quaint shops in every nook (we're not sure what a cranny is so we're avoiding mentioning them), Ennis is, perhaps, the most endearing town in Ireland.
It's no wonder Ennis was named by the Project for Public Spaces as one of the
World's top 60 great places to visit.
It was strategically built where the River Fergus forked and came together forming an island. In fact, Ennis takes its name from Inis, the Irish word for island.
Safe and fun, Ennis offers visitors everything they might expect to find in Ireland. The people are kind and helpful, the shopping is good and the food is excellent.
When you visit Ennis, walk along Market Street, away from the main drag and duck into the alley cutting over to the river. You will find a number of out-of-the-way shops where normally only the Irish shop.
Many of the restaurants in Ennis were started in the 1950's by chefs brought in from around the world to feed the crews of the airlines landing at Shannon.
Today the town offers one of the best selections of fine food in Ireland including the most wonderful roast duck. (My favorite. This tasty dish can be found in a number of places including the Monks'
Well in nearby Quin.)
For a fun time, take the Ennis
Walking Tour of the town and find out what things were like in the olde days.
