| Down is the Anglicised form of the Irish, Dún,
or Fort. Its position as the western-most county in Ireland explains why it may
have begun as a fortified town..
County Down has a number of tourist attractions including the Exploris
Aquarium and Seal Sanctuary. The Seal Sanctuary at the aquarium affords visitors the opportunity to view the
rehabilitation of rescued seal pups from their arrival through to full health
when they are re-introduced to the wild.
Exploris Aquarium is in Portaferry, County Down and is well worth the day trip from
Dublin.
County Down also has Ireland's first nature reserve, Murlough Nature
Reserve. This lies along the coast of Down and provides views of Slieve
Donard, the highest peak in the Mourne Mountains.
If you fancy flowers, visit Rowallane Garden known for its azaleas and
rhododendrons.
