Cork Guide |
County Cork IrelandCounty Cork is famous for its beautiful countryside and fair beaches. It lies at the southern part of Ireland where warm currents sweep past the coastline and salmon run in the rivers. County Cork has not the stark beauty of the cliffs of Clare or Donegal but verdant hillsides flowing down to the ocean making it a hiker's dream. Because of the "free-spirited" nature of the people of the area, Cork is called the "Rebel County" and has seen its share of conflict. During the Irish war of independence, Terence MacSweeney, Mayor of Cork, was sent to prison because he belonged to the IRA. He died at the end of a 76-day hunger strike. Cork's most famous son was Michael Collins, who fought in the General Post Office as second in charge in the 1916 Easter Uprising. This resulted in his capture and imprisonment but he was spared the firing squad and went on to rebuild the Irish Republican Brotherhood after his release. County Cork hotels range from the boutique like the Old Presbytery in Kinsale to the antique, the latter being the Eccles Hotel in Glengarriff which was built in 1745 as a hunting lodge by Lord Bantry. Perhaps the most breath-taking drive in Ireland is around the Ring of Beara. We recommend staying in Glengarriff on Bantry Bay - possibly at the Eccles - for the night and bringing along a camera.
