Families in Castlecoote: In Irish, Castlecoote is called, Baile Mhic
Oirteagh, or town of the Macgeraghtys. The Macgeraghtys were related to O
Fionnachta (meaning Fair Snow in Irish), the famous ancestor of the Finnerty
family. O Fionnachta was a great Irish Chieftain whose seat, Donamon Castle
is just a mile downstream of Castlecoote and also on the banks of the River
Suck.
These two very strong and powerful Irish families met O Sullivan Beara on
his great march after the defeat at Kinsale in 1603. They met at Glinsk a
village which is just five miles west of Castlecoote house in County Galway.
