Travel Advisories in Guatemala
Guatemala has experienced social
unrest of late and there is a high rate of criminal activity there. Driving in Guatemala is especially dangerous. In an
advisory, the Canadian government recommends travelling in convoys.
Random checkpoints are set up by terrorists. Always keep
your windows closed and doors locked while driving. Don't go off the
main road if you can help it, especially at night. Don't go for the budget accommodation there (it doesn't
cost all that much more to travel first class in Guatemala) and be wary
of strangers approaching you.
Avoid public transportation and use official tour
companies whenever possible.
