Be cautions when driving in El Salvador. Traffic enforcement is sporadic and there have been incidents of hijacking.

Drive with your doors locked and windows closed.

This said, renting a car in El Salvador may be the safest way to travel. Public transportation is rife with crime.

Avoid unpaved roads and be wary in remote areas.

Take a local guide with you when hiking or climbing the volcanoes. He may know the armed men who will try to rob you there.
