Renting a Car in Costa Rica

Car rental companies normally allow unrestricted driving within the Costa Rica only.

If clients wish to go to Nicaragua vehicles may be exchanged at the Nicaraguan border with an agent's Nicaragua vehicle.

Advance arrangements must be made with rental agent in Costa Rica.

The minimum driver's age is 21. Young drivers (21 to 24 years of age) may be subject to a young drivers surcharge.

Helpful Hints

Book your car rentals before going to Costa Rica. It can be difficult and very expensive if you try to book after arrival.

We also suggest brushing up your Spanish.

Many of the bridges in the country can only accommodate one car at a time and signs in Spanish will ask you to yield if you do not have the right of way.

Car Hire in Costa Rica

If you don't have some small understanding of the Spanish language, embarrassment may occur as you plunge off the bridge and into crocodile-infested waters. During the "green season," from May through November, it is advisable to rent a four-wheel, off-road vehicle because of the swollen rivers and during the dry season it is suggested you do the same because the roads are horrible.
